SAD NEWS as the Hammers legendary photographer officially announced dead

Sad news about the death of Steve Bacon. Such a famous football photographer was probably nowhere to be found.

Steve had his own song among the fans “Stevie Bacon is just one!” and inspired Phil Jupitus to write a very funny Clicker Bacon cartoon in the fanzine Fortune’s Always Hiding.

Clicker even published a book called There’s Only One Stevie Bacon with Biteback in 2012. Here is my review at the time.

“Bacon spent 30 years as a club photographer travelling on the team bus and staying with the team, so he has plenty of juicy inside information about banter, boozing and boyish antics, though it’s all told from the point of view of a West Ham fan born in Plaistow.

We learn that Lou Macari, with whom Bacon got on well, asked Stevie for advice before signing Colin Foster. He clearly did not get on with Alan Pardew and writes:

“I have never known a more arrogant man in my life”. Pardew didn’t get off to a good start with Steve when he declared at a hotel dinner that if Bacon’s order looked nicer,

“I’ll eat it!” Never come between a growing boy and his food. The book tells of a terrified Paolo Di Canio who refused to fly, Harry Redknapp covering Don Hutchison with sandwiches,

John Moncur jumping out of cupboards during team talk, and Igor Stimac arranging for the players to shoot machine guns in the Croatian forest during a UEFA Cup match.

“Let’s hope Stevie gets some nice shots of Bobby Moore and colleagues from the great touchline above.
