Former New York Mets catcher James McCann has found a new home in the National League East, signing a minor-league deal with the Atlanta Braves. The move comes as the Braves look to bolster their catching depth ahead of the 2025 season.
McCann, 33, originally signed a four-year, $40.6 million contract with the Mets before the 2021 season but struggled to meet expectations. Over two seasons in New York, he posted a .220 batting average with just 13 home runs and 64 RBIs across 182 games. His offensive struggles, combined with injuries and the emergence of younger catching options, led the Mets to trade him to the Baltimore Orioles before the 2023 season.
During his time in Baltimore, McCann took on a backup role behind All-Star Adley Rutschman. While his offensive production remained modest, he provided veteran leadership and solid defense. In 2024, he hit .230 with 5 home runs and 25 RBIs in 78 games.
The Braves’ decision to sign McCann comes in the wake of injuries and depth concerns at the catcher position. While Sean Murphy remains the team’s primary option behind the plate, McCann offers a veteran presence and defensive reliability should he earn a promotion to the big league roster.
If McCann impresses in spring training or at Triple-A Gwinnett, he could find himself back in the majors with an opportunity to contribute to an Atlanta team aiming for another deep postseason run.
