Brian Barry-Murphy left Manchester City in December to become an assistant alongside the Dutchman at Leicester City.
The 46-year-old arrived in Leicestershire as a highly-rated coach after working in the development team at Man City and being praised by Pep Guardiola.
But Barry-Murphy has always harnessed ambitions of becoming a central manager, and now, Sky Sports’ reporter Rob Dorsett has revealed that the Irishman is closing in on the Cardiff City managerial vacancy after the two clubs agreed on a compensation package.
With personal terms at an advanced stage, Leicester are set to lose their assistant to the Welsh side in the coming days.
Cardiff have been looking for a new manager since sacking Omer Riza in April before suffering relegation to League One, and although Des Buckingham and Aaron Ramsey were in the run-in, it’s Barry-Murphy who they’ve appeared to go for.
What Barry-Murphy leaving could mean for Ruud van Nistelrooy
In December, Leicester City’s owner warned he couldn’t sack Van Nistelrooy as it would have put a strain on the club’s already difficult financial situation and its compliance with PSR.
Leicester are now facing a points deduction after breaching PSR rules during the 2023/24 season, and that perhaps limits the chance of axing the former Manchester United striker.
However, with Van Nistelrooy’s assistant now packing his bags and leaving, it surely places his future under immense pressure, too.
Championship expert Justin Peach thinks Gary O’Neil would be the ‘perfect’ fit for Leicester, while Rohl remains an option amid the financial chaos at Sheffield Wednesday.
Barry-Murphy’s pending departure to Cardiff perhaps highlights the uncertainty surrounding the Foxes heading into this summer, and arguably, where the club currently stand on Van Nistelrooy as a huge decision awaits.
