One player who has started regularly in the Championship this season and is also in danger of being relegated from the top flight is Brenden Aaronson, who scored for his country on Sunday.
The American international has nine goals and two assists in 43 starts in the second division for the Whites, but he struggled as Leeds were bottom of the table, with one goal in 36 Premier League games.
Aaronson has not done enough in the 2022/23 season, so he should be concerned about the club’s renewed interest in the new number ten.
Leeds confident of signing Premier League midfielder
Leeds believe they are close to agreeing a deal to sign Brighton & Hove Albion attacking midfielder Facundo Buonanotte in the summer transfer window, according to a Spanish report.
The publication claims that the Whites have set their sights on the Argentine as they look to strengthen their squad and are prepared to be ambitious in the market.
It adds that they have identified the Brighton youngster as a priority target and are “confident” they will “do a deal” for his services soon.
The report also mentions that the Seagulls are looking for a fee that could reach £30m with add-ons, making it a very expensive purchase for the Championship champions.
Why Buonanotte would be an upgrade on Aaronson
Leeds would sign a significant upgrade on Aaronson at number ten in Daniel Farke’s 4-2-3-1 formation by closing in on the Brighton youngster this summer.
Buonanotte, who was dubbed a “magician” by the Rising Stars XI on X, spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Leicester in the Premier League and caught the eye with some impressive performances.
The 20-year-old star finished the season with a very respectable return of five goals and seven “big chances created” in just 14 opening games for the Foxes, including the impressive goal against Forest in the clip above.
His performances as an attacking threat in the Premier League this season, compared to Aaronson’s performances during his prime at Elland Road, suggest he would improve on Farke’s side.
Buonanotte scored more goals and created more “big chances” at the peak of the season than Aaronson, despite starting half as many games.
This suggests the left-footed wizard would offer more quality up top than the American, which could help the Whites pick up crucial points in their bid to avoid immediate relegation from the Premier League next season.
Buonanotte, despite being a small player, could also offer more physicality than Aaronson. He has won 33% of his aerial duels and made 1.7 clearances per game in the league, while the Leeds flop has won just 17% of his aerial duels and made 1.3 clearances per game.
This suggests the £30m-rated star could be less of a problem than Leeds’ No.11 when it comes to his job of possession in the top flight.
