Newcastle United Set for Financial Relief as £72m Loss Set to Exit PSR Calculations

Newcastle United are poised for a significant financial boost as a £72million loss is set to drop out of their Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) assessment, sources have informed Football Insider.

Since the Saudi-led Public Investment Fund (PIF) completed their £305million takeover in October 2021, the Magpies have faced challenges staying within the Premier League’s financial regulations. Under PSR guidelines, clubs are allowed a maximum loss of £105million over a three-year period.

To avoid breaching PSR for the 2023-24 season, Newcastle sold Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh to Nottingham Forest and Brighton before the 30 June accounting deadline. These sales helped limit their annual loss to just £11million.

However, the club has been weighed down by their £72million deficit from the 2022-23 campaign, despite relatively restrained transfer spending in recent years. From July onwards, that hefty loss will no longer count toward their PSR calculations, providing Eddie Howe’s side with greater flexibility to strengthen their squad this summer.

Newcastle Eye £100m Champions League Windfall

Newcastle shattered their revenue record in 2023-24, with turnover soaring from £250million to £320million. This surge was fueled by their Champions League participation and a sharp rise in commercial earnings, which jumped from £47million to £86million.

Having secured fifth place in the Premier League, the Magpies will return to Europe’s elite competition next season. Financial expert Stefan Borson estimates that their Champions League campaign could generate up to £100million in additional revenue.

Forest Demand Higher Bid for Elanga

As Howe seeks to bolster his attacking options, Nottingham Forest winger Anthony Elanga has emerged as a top target. However, Football Insider revealed on 15 June that Forest have rejected Newcastle’s initial approach and are holding out for at least £50million.

The 23-year-old Swedish international was a consistent performer last season, contributing six goals and 11 assists while featuring in every Premier League match for Forest.
