Sunderland’s hopes of signing Spanish forward Gonzalo García have been dashed after the highly rated striker committed his future to Real Madrid by signing a new contract until June 2030.
The news was confirmed on Friday evening by transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who stated that Madrid have “no plans to let him leave” following García’s impressive performances at the FIFA Club World Cup, where he finished as top scorer and earned high praise from manager Xabi Alonso.
Valued at around £42.3 million due to a release clause in his contract, the 21-year-old has quickly become one of Spanish football’s most exciting attacking talents. His standout displays at the Club World Cup, featuring key goals and assists, further cemented his reputation as a lethal and creative presence in the final third.
Having risen rapidly from Real Madrid Castilla, García’s sharp finishing, intelligent movement, and versatility have drawn comparisons to some of the club’s most promising academy graduates in recent years. Sunderland had explored a potential move earlier in the summer as part of their Premier League recruitment strategy under Régis Le Bris, but Madrid have now acted decisively to secure his long-term future.
The new deal highlights Madrid’s faith in García as a key part of their long-term project, with Alonso reportedly a major admirer of his work ethic and big-game mentality. Other Sunderland Transfer News: Masuaku Deal Nearing Completion
Sunderland are close to finalizing the signing of Arthur Masuaku, who is set to become their tenth summer acquisition.
The 31-year-old left-back is available on a free transfer after leaving Turkish side Besiktas, where he made 44 appearances last season. A seasoned top-flight defender, Masuaku brings extensive Premier League experience from his six-year spell at West Ham United, along with international pedigree as a DR Congo regular.
His arrival would bolster Le Bris’ defensive options, with Sunderland currently short on depth and experience at the back. Injuries to Luke O’Nien, Aji Alese, Dennis Cirkin, and Leo Hjelde have left the squad stretched, forcing Le Bris to experiment with players out of position during pre-season.
Primarily a left-back, Masuaku’s signing would also allow Le Bris to deploy Reinildo centrally when needed, as seen in last weekend’s friendly against Real Betis.
According to Fabrizio Romano, Masuaku is undergoing a medical ahead of a proposed two-year deal at the Stadium of Light. If completed in time, his debut could come against former club West Ham on the opening day of the Premier League season.
