Shearer makes shocking Newcastle admission: I’d gladly finish in the bottom half!

Newcastle United legend Alan Shearer has revealed that he would not mind his old side finishing low in the league on one condition.

Newcastle beat Liverpool 2–1 last season to secure their first EFL Cup title, their first major domestic trophy since the 1954–55 FA Cup over 70 years ago.

The Magpies beat Nottingham Forest, Chelsea, Arsenal and, of course, Liverpool to lift the title which meant the world to the majority of fans who had never witnessed their side lift a trophy.

Shearer, speaking after the 2-2 draw with Chelsea, made a wild admission that he would love to see his side lift the trophy once more, even if it means missing out on a European spot.

“Chelsea came right back into it, and you’ve got to credit to Maresca for the changes. But from a Newcastle point of view, it’s those silly errors giving teams chances that you didn’t see so much of last season.

“But look, they’re in the semi-final of the League Cup and doing alright in the Champions League. It’s the league form where we’ve got to try and get into the top half.

“Having said that, if you give me winning the Carabao Cup again, I’d gladly finish in the bottom half.”

Newcastle have spent big in recent seasons, and the club’s goal will be to finish within a European spot. Fans will be stunned to hear Shearer’s statement, as even though another trophy would be welcomed, such a place would go against all objectives.
