Leeds United will surely regret letting £78k a week star walk amid potential injury crisis at Elland Road

Last season, Daniel Farke had one of the best Leeds United teams in recent history. The Whites scored 95 goals in the Championship on their way to lifting the league title.

What made the previous campaign more impressive is how the Leeds boss achieved that despite losing two of the league’s best attacking players. The season before saw Crysencio Summerville and Georginio Rutter combine for over 40 goals in the league. They were both snapped up by Premier League clubs when Farke’s side lost the Championship play off final – a moment that still haunts Rutter, who is now at Brighton.

A key part of the Leeds attack last year was the fullbacks; the system saw Jayden Boyle and Junior Firpo almost playing as wingers. The duo notched up 24 goal contributions in the league combined

Leeds United will regret failing to provide cover for key position

This season was going to be different, knowing that Junior Firpo’s contract was set to expire. Leeds had a new deal on the table for him, but he had his sights set on a return to Spain. So the Whites went out and signed Gabriel Gudmundsson from Lille in France. This season, the first choice fullback pairing has been Bogle and Gudmundsson, and since the style in the team has changed, their responsibilities have shifted – now with less attacking responsibilities on their shoulders.

Both have been key this season, but with the recent injury problems concerning the Swedish international, it has raised a bit of concern. Gudmundsson is the only natural left footed left back in the team, and in his absence, the only player who can possibly fill in is James Justin. Gudmundsson is a doubt for Monday night’s game but may still make it in time.

49ers must help avoid potential injury crisis

The 49ers need to explore adding cover at left back/left wingback – the club have very limited options outside the 26-year old. Leeds have done very well to avoid a defensive crisis this season – the recent Joe Rodon injury caused a bit of a scare. If possible this month, the club have to look at options to bring on board at least till the end of the season. Jayden Bogle has also had his fair share of knocks, which could make it difficult for the team considering their best options in the current wingback positions are their two main starters.
