By June 30, the club will lose five players who played vital roles in their promotion back to the Premier League. Two loanees are set to depart, while three others will see their contracts expire. Josuha Guilavogui has already been confirmed as leaving, Junior Firpo is poised to join Betis, and Sam Byram’s contract extension remains unresolved. Meanwhile, loanees Manor Solomon and Joe Rothwell will return to their parent clubs, with Solomon seeking another chance at Tottenham and Rothwell never in contention for a permanent move.
However, more exits could follow—including that of winger Dan James.
Everton’s Interest in Dan James
Everton, now led by former Leeds CEO Angus Kinnear, have expressed interest in signing James after opting against retaining Jack Harrison. James, whose contract runs until 2026, was instrumental last season, contributing 21 goals and assists and earning a nomination for Championship Player of the Season.
Despite Everton’s interest, Leeds remain confident of keeping him. Talks with his representatives are ongoing, and a new two-year deal is on the table. Manager Daniel Farke has reportedly made it clear to the board that retaining James is crucial for their Premier League survival—losing him would be a major blow.
Wage Negotiations Underway
Leeds are offering James reduced terms compared to his initial 2021 wages, aligning with the club’s current financial structure. While his exact previous salary remains undisclosed, it was likely substantial given his move from Manchester United.
Given James’ importance last season and Farke’s insistence on keeping him, the 49ers may need to show some flexibility in negotiations. For now, the expectation is that James will stay—but the situation remains one to watch.
