Everton and Roma Advance in Unique Deal for Defender Wesley

Everton and Roma are progressing on an agreement for Flamengo defender Wesley, which would involve the Toffees signing him before loaning him to the Italian club.

According to Corriere dello Sport, this “synergistic operation” between the two Friedkin-owned clubs is gaining momentum. The idea reportedly originated from Roma’s directors and Wesley’s agent, who is pushing for his client’s move to Europe.

While Roma are the most interested party, the proposed structure would see Everton purchase Wesley for around €30m before sending him on a two-year loan to the Serie A side. Roma may first attempt a direct signing, but the current plan appears to be the preferred route.

Wesley has already agreed to the arrangement, and efforts are underway to finalize terms that satisfy all parties. Everton have made initial contact with Flamengo, who have set the defender’s price at €30m. The deal would involve loaning Wesley to Roma—possibly for two seasons—with an obligation to buy based on sporting conditions.

This setup allows Roma to delay registering the transfer fee on their financial books for at least a year, potentially extending the loan if needed. But what’s in it for Everton?

Corriere suggests the Toffees could secure a sell-on clause, entitling them to a percentage of any future profit from Wesley’s sale. Additionally, if Everton qualify for European competition this season, Roma might pay €25-30m next summer to finalize the deal, providing Everton with a “significant capital gain” to strengthen their squad.

From an Italian perspective, the deal benefits all sides. However, questions remain about how Everton’s Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR) situation would accommodate a €30m expenditure. Despite these concerns, Corriere indicates the plan is moving forward.
