MusaAnthony Gordon isn’t a very popular figure among Everton fans after he left for Newcastle United in January 2023.
Everton were in the midst of a relegation battle when Gordon decided to leave in a £45m deal to join the Magpies.
Wayne Rooney publicly called Gordon out for the way he left, as the England international refused to play in a bid to push through the move.
Gordon has also made digs at Everton since leaving, so he’s always booed when he’s returned to Goodison Park and the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Now, Eddie Howe has just made a stunning claim about his Newcastle winger, which Toffees fans won’t be surprised by.
Eddie Howe suggests Anthony Gordon is refusing to play right wing for Newcastle
Quite remarkably, Howe has just come out and suggested that Gordon is refusing to play on the right wing.
The Newcastle boss was asked why Harvey Barnes was always the one shifted to the right, and he replied: “I don’t think Anthony enjoys playing on the right.
“I think Harvey is a lot more open to it and quite enjoys the freedom that the position gives him with our way of playing.
“Of course, that doesn’t mean I can’t play Anthony out there but if a player doesn’t really want to play in that position I think it’s a difficult one to force a player to do it because I don’t think you’ll get the same kind of performances.”
Howe added that Barnes would prefer to play off the left: “I think his number one position is the left and I know where he would ideally like to play but he’s a goal threat off both sides and the stats would back that up.”
Some Newcastle fans want Anthony Gordon sold
Gordon’s reputation among the Geordies has really started to shift this season, as he’s been so inconsistent.
In fact, after the defeat to fierce rivals Sunderland last month, some Newcastle fans urged the club to sell Gordon for his dreadful performance.
The former Toffees wide player has scored just two Premier League goals this term and has only registered one assist.
It has previously been reported that Gordon was keen on a move to Liverpool, but that now looks incredibly unlikely.
His £100m valuation will have significantly dropped over the last few months.
