After Skov Olsen: Rangers very keen on signing “frightening” Gassama upgrade at Ibrox – opinion

Glasgow Rangers are reportedly in talks with Wolfsburg over a deal to sign Denmark international Andreas Skov Olsen to bolster their squad in the January transfer window.

The left-footed star, who was linked with a move to Ibrox in January 2022, could join the Scottish Premiership giants on loan for the second half of the campaign, having only scored two goals in 20 Bundesliga matches in the past 12 months.

Skov Olsen, as shown in the graphic above, regularly scored and assisted goals during his time in Belgium with Club Brugge, which suggests that he could be an exciting addition to the squad.

The Wolfsburg flop is not the only attacker who could arrive at Ibrox before the end of the window, though, as the Gers look set for a busy few weeks.

Rangers enquire about deal for Pro League star

Whilst Skov Olsen is a former Belgian Pro League star who is in their sights, the club are also reportedly looking at a player who is currently shining in the Pro League.

According to a report from Africa, as covered by The Scottish Sun, Glasgow Rangers are one of the teams interested in a deal to sign Charleroi attacker Parfait Guiagon in the January transfer window.

The report claims that the Gers and English side Norwich City, managed by Philippe Clement, have both made enquiries about a possible deal for the 24-year-old star.

This means that the Light Blues have been in talks with the Belgian side to discuss the likelihood of a transfer for the Ivorian winger this month, but the outlet does not reveal whether or not a bid is likely to follow.

It has been reported that Charleroi are looking for a fee in the region of £3.5m to sell the versatile attacker, and it is now down to Rangers to splash the cash to beat Clement to the signing.

Why Rangers should sign Parfait Guiagon

As Skov Olsen is a left-footed right winger, Rangers should also still be looking to sign Guiagon this month because he is a right-footed left winger, which would provide Danny Rohl with a new signing for each flank.

The Charleroi star predominantly plays as a left winger, although he can also play as a number ten, and he could arrive at Ibrox as an upgrade on Djeidi Gassama for Rohl.

Since joining from Sheffield Wednesday last summer, the French forward has failed to provide consistent quality at the top end of the pitch for the Gers, with one goal and two assists in 22 Premiership outings.

The 22-year-old winger did win a penalty in the 2-0 victory over Aberdeen on Sunday, the second one that he has been awarded in the league this season, but his lack of goals and assists is a cause for concern.

Guiagon’s form in the Pro League this season, and in recent seasons, suggests that he has the potential to offer more to Rohl’s side than Gassama has so far in the Premiership.

The Ivorian star, who was described as a “1v1 demon” by writer Louorns, has scored at least six goals in each of the last three seasons, including seven goals, 12 ‘big chances’ created, and seven assists in the 2024/25 Pro League campaign, per Sofascore.

As you can see in the table above, Guiagon has outperformed Gassama at league level in the current campaign, with five more goals in five fewer appearances, whilst also completing more dribbles per game.

These statistics show that the £3.5m-rated star can offer even more of a threat as both a scorer and a creator for the Scottish giants, whilst still exciting supporters and carrying the team up the pitch with his dribbles.

If Guiagon can adapt to Scottish football and carry his form from the Pro League over to the Premiership, the 24-year-old star would be a terrific signing for Rangers to improve their output in the final third in the second half of the season.
