Our midfield has been leaky (“cardboard-like” – that’s how I described it) and every combination of Rodriguez, Alvarez, Soucek and Soler, along with the out-of-form Paqueta, has been poor at stopping the opposition’s attacks and transferring our play from the backline to the front.
The deficiencies in the middle of the park have been well documented: it is pleasing to see that West Ham intend to do something about it. The news that Man City had rejected West Ham’s interest in James McAtee was previously reported by Gonzo. Meanwhile, more information has been released today about the “McAtee” alternative, which means that West Ham have no intention of sitting back and waiting for Manchester City to dictate terms.
The latest information is Javi Guerra from Valencia. Spanish website si.com publishes the article ” Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham are interested in Valencia’s centre-forward Javi Guerra” and describes him as: ” A Spanish Under-21 international who has already amassed 56 La Liga appearances for Los Ches, scoring five goals and assisting once since making his debut in 2022.
His performances have led to widespread praise from pundits and former professionals alike, and many claim he has the potential to break through to the very top.”
There was another player who was originally discounted for West Ham because of the huge £100 million release clause, which Valencia later backed out of because of their financial situation: £25 million was rumoured to be enough.
This is contrary to West Ham’s suggestion that they would now look for better value in the English domestic league, but if a deal can be done for the 21-year-old, we would all be desperate to find a full-blooded player in claret and blue who can actually keep up with the opposition, tackle and pick a pass. We can all dream.
